Fishing Report
Dec, 2009
Currently the water temperature is from the low to mid 60’s. On the Oconee River side of the lake there is a lot of trash in the water and the lake is very muddy. Down the lake near the dam and most of Richland Creek has a little stain.
Bass fishing is currently good. Most of the bass are in shallow water in the back of the small pockets and coves around the lake as they follow the shad. Use your Lowrance HDS unit to find the area where you find the large schools of bait fish. Fishing a ¼ ounce Rat-L Trap using a stop and go retrieve is a good way to catch a good number of fish. In some areas you may get a mixed bag of Largemouth, Hybrids, and Stripers. An O’Nellie spinnerbait, in the white/chart has also been a very good bait to use. Over the next few weeks as the water temperature drops to the low 50s work your way out from the back of the pocket to the mouth of pocket as you follow the shad while they move out of the coves back into open water. The Largemouth will be following the shad as they feed up for the winter months.
Crappie fishing is Fair. These fish have been shallow but also are starting to move back into deeper water over brush piles. Your best bait has been live minnows. Night fishing has been good setting up lights under the bridges or in the timber. This will be good throughout the month of December.
